In adherence to the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to protect the rights and welfare of OFWs, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW)-Migrant Workersโ Office in Malaysia, in coordination with the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, has conducted a welfare visit to check on the well-being of the 8 Filipino crew members of vessel MT Krishna 1, who are currently detained in a police station in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia.
The Filseafarers are detained for alleged violations of Malaysian immigration laws and regulations. โOur Labor Attachรจ Jocelyn Ortega and DMW-MWO lawyer in Malaysia visited the 8 jailed seafarers and raised the defense of good faith defense before the investigating officer.
We have been informed that the results of the investigation will be out soon,โDMW Secretary Cacdac said. The Licensed Manning Agency (LMA) of the 8 Filseafarers has assured the continued payment of salaries and benefits to the seafarers and their families.
The DMW is set to conduct its own investigation of the LMA and the shipowner, in terms of finding out the circumstances that led to the 8 Filseafarersโ detention, and whether adequate protective measures were undertaken.
Secretary Cacdac also assures the seafarers of all the necessary assistance and support from the DMW in this ordeal.โWe are thankful to Malaysian authorities for allowing the welfare visit, and to the PHL Embassy in Kuala Lumpur for its guidance and support,โ Secretary Cacdac said. ####
