EcoWaste, nagbabala sa pagbili ng mga hindi awtorisado, reef-toxic sunscreen

Pinag-iingat ngayon ng toxics watchdog group EcoWaste Coalition ang publiko sa pagbili ng mga hindi awtorisadong sunscreen products.

Kamakailan lang ay nagsagawa ang grupo ng
market monitoring sa Maynila kung saan natukoy na anim sa 12 brands ng sunscreen products na ibinebenta sa halagang ₱60 to ₱250 ay wala sa Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Verification Portal.

Dahil dito, nagsumite na ng liham ang EcoWaste sa FDA para ipaalam ang mga ibinebentang hindi otorisadong sunscreen products, na maaaring makaapekto sa kalusugan ng publiko.

Kaugnay nito, nagpahayag rin ng pagkabahala ang Ecowaste coalition sa presensya ng reef-damaging substances sa 10 samples na kanilang binili.

“Knowing the need to protect and nurture our coral reefs, which have been ‘in constant and rapid decline,’ the Philippines should consider adopting an all-encompassing ‘Sunscreen Regulations,’ which, along with other conservation measures, can help in restoring the integrity and health of our marine ecosystems,” ayon sa EcoWaste Coalition

Ilan lang sa mga reef-toxic sunscreen ingredients ay ang oxybenzone (benzophenone-3), octinoxate (octyl methoxycinnamate, ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate), octocrylene, 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor, at avobenzone (butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane).

Dahil dito, umapela ang EcoWaste sa FDA na mag-isyu ng public health warning sa unauthorized sunscreen products; at magpatupad ng regulatory measures na magbabawal sa pagbebenta ng ‘reef-toxic sunscreen.’  | ulat ni Merry Ann Bastasa
