Binuong bilateral defense guidelines, tinalakay sa pulong nina Pres. Marcos Jr. at US Defense Sec. Austin sa Pentagon

Pinag-usapan sa pulong sa Pentagon, Washington DC, nina Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at US Defense Secretary Llyod Austin ang pagpapalalim pa ng bilateral planning at operational cooperation ng dalawang bansa.

Kabilang na dito ang combined maritime activities, tulad ng joint patrol, upang suportahan ang Pilipinas sa pag-exercise nito sa karapatan sa South China Sea (SCS).

Kaugnay nito, pinapurihan ni Secretary Austin si Pangulong Marcos sa matagumpay na Balikatan Exercise na isinagawa sa Pilipinas nitong Abril.

“We’ve made the alliance stronger, including the recent expansion of our Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement to four new sites across the Philippines. I also like to talk about concluding our new bilateral defense guidelines and other ways that we can build on our progress. So, Mr. President, we’re grateful for your enduring commitment to modernizing and deepening our alliance. Thanks again for making the trip and we’re especially delighted to have you here at the Pentagon, Mr. President. Welcome,” pahayag ni Secretary Austin.

Ang katatapos lamang na Balikatan ang pinakamalaking Balikatan Exercises sa pagitan ng dalawang bansa, kung saan nasa 17, 000 sundalo ang nakibahagi sa mga aktibidad sa tatlong magkakaibang EDCA sites sa Pilipinas.

Ginamit rin ni Secretary Austin ang pagkakataon upang bigyang-diin ang commitment ng US na suportahan ang pagpapalakas ng defense capabilities ng Pilipinas.

Kabilang na dito ang pag-develop ng Security Sector Assistance Roadmap o ang magsisilbing gabay sa shared defense modernization investments para sa susunod na lima hanggang 10 taon.  | ulat ni Racquel Bayan
