Kasabay ng obserbasyon ng National Rice Awareness Month, hinihikayat ngayon ng Department of Agriculture (DA) ang consumers na tangkilikin ang bigas na itinanim at ibinibenta ng mga Pilipinong magsasaka.

Sa press briefing sa Malacañang, sinabi ni DA-PhilRice Dr. Hazel Antonio na ang kanilang “Be RICEponsible” campaign ay gugulong hanggang 2028.

Dito binibigyang diin ang kahalagahan ng pagtangkilik sa locally produced rice bilang tulong sa local farmers.

Sa ganitong paraan, mapapataas ang income ng mga Pilipinong magsasaka.

“I think our farmers appreciate the hard work. Pero this time, we’re encouraging every consumer to buy their products kasi isa din sa mga goals ng DA, specifically ng PhilRice under the rice program, ay tulungan iyong ating mga farmers to market their products as milled rice na instead na ibenta nila as fresh palay sa farmgate,” — Dr. Antonio.

Nakikipagtulungan na aniya sila sa insititutional buyers, upang direktang bumili ng bigas ang mga ito, sa mga magsasaka.

“So, now, we’re partnering with institutional buyers to buy from them directly. Just recently nga, mayroon kaming nakuhang order from Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction Network, so they will be buying more than seven million worth of rice mula sa ating mga farmers,” — Dr. Antonio.

Kaugnay pa rin ng National Rice Awareness Month, umaapela rin ang PhilRice sa publiko na tumulong upang mabawasan ang volume ng mga bigas o kanin na nasasayang kada taon.
