Nais ni House Minority Leader at 4Ps Party-list Representative Marcelino Libanan na palakasin ng pamahalaan ang programa nito para himukin ang mga overseas Filipino na dito sa Pilipinas magdiwang ng holiday season.
Ayon sa mambabatas, malaking tulong ito sa pagpapasigla ng turismo at dagdag na trabaho para sa bansa.
Kumpara kasi aniya sa mga foreign tourist, mas gumagastos ang mga Pilipino na naging permanenteng residente o citizen sa ibang bansa kapag sila ang bumibisita dito.
“We want the Tourism Promotions Board to draw up a new marketing plan that will purposely entice overseas Filipinos to come and visit their motherland. Compared to other foreign visitors, overseas Filipinos tend to spend considerably more money here during their vacations, mainly due to their strong social and economic ties,” sabi ni Libanan.
Tinukoy ng kongresista ang datos ng Department of Tourism (DOT) kung saan nakapagtala ng 396,147 na Philippine passport holder na mga permanent overseas resident ang bumisita sa bansa mula Enero hanggang Nobyembre ng taong 2023.
Habang noon namang 2022, nang humupa ang COVID-19 pandemic at nagluwag sa pagbiyahe, pumalo agad ng 628,445 Philippine passport holder na resident alien abroad ang bumisita sa Pilipinas.
“Many overseas Filipinos spend for the improvement of their ancestral homes here in the Philippines when they come for a visit, while others set up new investments, such as apartments for rent, to provide a recurring income stream to their relatives here. They are also likely to purchase locally-made products for them to bring with them when they leave,” sabi pa ni Libanan.
Kasabay nito umaasa si libanan na mapagtibay ang House Bill No. 6472 para i-upgrade ang benepisyo at pribilehiyo ng mga balikbayang Pinoy sa pamamagitan ng pag-amyenda ng Balikbayan Program Law of 1989.
Dito ay itataas sa $6,000 ang aggregate tax-exempt purchase ng mga balikbayan sa mga duty-free shop ng DOT mula sa kasalukuyang $3,500. | ulat ni Kathleen Jean Forbes
