Pagbibigay ng scholarship sa mga estudyante upang mahimok na pumasok sa pangingisda, dapat pang palakasin ayon sa isang mambabatas

Pinayuhan ngayon ni House Committee on Aquaculture and Fisheries Chair Bryan Yamsuan ang pamahalaan na makipagtulungan sa mga congressional district, upang mas maraming estudyante ang mahimok na pumasok sa aquaculture at fisheries sa pamamagitan ng pagbibigay ng scholarship.

Ayon kay Yamsuan, nakakabahala ang aging o tumatandang populasyon ng mga mangingisda sa bansa.

Batay sa datos ng Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) sa 2.5 million na Pilipinong nangingisda, 24 percent na ang nasa 60 years old pataas ang edad habang ang 21% ay 51 hanggang 60.

Ibig sabihin, nasa 8% o 200,000 lang ang nasa edad 21-30.

“This is alarming. The fisheries and aquaculture industry, a major source of protein for our people, is vital to our food security. Gayong pinagpupugay natin ang giting, dedikasyon at sipag ng ating mga mangingisda, tayo ay nababahala na baka dumating ang araw na magkulang na ang kanilang mga bilang kung hindi tayo kikilos agad para muling lumakas ang sektor at ma-encourage ang mga kabataan na  humubog ng career  sa fisheries and aquaculture,”  Yamsuan said.

Sa kabila naman ng scholarship na ibinibigay ng pamahalaan, iilan lang ang kumukuha nito.

Katunayan ayon sa BFAR, nasa 1,384 na mag-aaral lang ang nabigyan ng scholarship ng ahensya.

Noong 2019 sa 2,354 na aplikante, 388 lang ang pumasa sa scholarship criteria.

Kaya naman mungkahi nito sa BFAR na hingin ang tulong ng mga congressional district na may coastal communities upang mas mapalaganap, at makahikayat ng mga estudyante na interesado para sa scholarship. | ulat ni Kathleen Forbes
