Malawakang info campaign laban sa hazing, ipinanawagan ni Sen. Zubiri

Nanawagan si Senador Juan Miguel Zubiri sa mga key government agencies na paigtingin ang kamalayan ng publiko tungkol sa panganib at legal consequences ng fraternity hazing.

Kabilang sa mga kinalampag ng senador ang Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Department of Education (DepEd), at ang Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Ang panawagan na ito ni Zubiri ay kasunod ng hatol sa mga suspek sa pagkamatay ng hazing victim na si Horacio ‘Atio’ Castillo III at kasunod rin ng kaso ng pagkamatay ng isang 18-year old student sa Nueva Ecija dahil rin sa hazing.

Ipinaliwanag ni Zubiri na nahatulan ang mga pumatay kay Atio sa ilalim ng 1995 Anti-Hazing Law at hindi sa bisa ng 2018 version ng batas. Kaya naman walang school official na nahatulan para sa pagkamatay ng biktima.

Bagamat ikinagalak ng senador na naparusahan ng “reclusion perpetua” ang 10 miyembro ng fraternity na pumaslang kay Atio, sinabi ng mambabatas na dapat ring mapanagot ang mga school officials sa kaso.

Ipinahayag ng mambabatas na sa kabila ng Anti-Hazing Act of 2018, ilang sektor ng academic community ang nag-aalangan pa ring burahin ang hazing culture dahil marami sa mga faculty members na alumni ng mga fraternities o organisasyon.

Balak ni Zubiri na makipag-usap kay Education Secretary Sonny Angara at Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chair Prospero de Vera para maglabas ng memo ang mga paaralan at unibersidad na magbababala sa mga organisasyon, fraternities, at iba pang grupo na isang krimen ang hazing at may karampatan itong parusa sa ilalim ng batas.
