Siniguro ng pamahalaan na ililipat sa mas maayos na detention facility si Mary Jane Veloso, at tatrabahuhin rin ng gobyerno na mapaikli ang panahon na igugugol nito sa detention facility.
Pahayag ito ni Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, kasunod ng anunsyo ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., na pumayag na ang Indonesia na maiuwi sa Pilipinas si Veloso at dito na ipagpatuloy ang pagsisilbi sa kaniyang sintensya.
“She will not be detained here along with those convicted of heinous crimes. There’s an option which the Asec. will explain as to saan ma-detain. But for sure, she will be detained in accordance with our discussion, and the bottom line is at least she’s here.” -Usec. de Vega
Si Veloso ay nasa death row sa Indonesia, dahil sa kasong mayroong kinalaman sa ilegal na droga.
Sa press briefing sa Malacañan, sinabi ni de Vega na sa kasalukuyan hinihintay pa nila ang pormal na tugon ng Indonesia, sa ipinadalang letter of request para sa transfer ni Veloso mula sa Indonesia pabalik ng bansa.
Ayon sa opisyal, sa oras na makauwi sa bansa si Veloso hindi ito agad-agad na makakalaya.
Kailangan pa rin kasi aniyang kilalanin at i-respeto ang batas ng Indonesia, at kahit papaano kailangan ipagpatuloy ang pagsisilbi sa sintensya ni Veloso.
“Aside from what it means that there will be no more death penalty is that she’s here and, of course, she’ll be visited by her family easier but also, sometimes she’s being brought to the hospital in Indonesia. [Unclear] because she has some body spasm or something, and it’s better for her to be here where Filipino doctors, of course, will be able to take care of her. So that’s another advantage for being here.” -Usec de Vega.
Gayunpaman, pagsisiguro ng opisyal, ginagawa nila ang lahat upang mapabuti ang kondisyon ni Veloso. Ang mahalaga naman aniya sa usaping ito, mailayo sa banta ng execution o bitay si Veloso, lalo’t aniya ay biktima lamang rin ito ng human trafficking.
Ayon naman kay Justice Asec Mico Clavano, isa sa mga tinitingnan nila na paglilipatan kay Veloso ay sa Correctional Institute for Women sa Mandaluyong.
“That is a discussion that is still being made in the Department of Justice as to where she could be detained. The Secretary has already given instructions to the National Bureau of Investigation if ever and when Mary Jane Veloso would be coming home to pick her up and bring her to the detention center of …that will be decided upon. But we are looking at the Correctional Institute for Women in Mandaluyong as a possible facility that she could be transferred to.” -Usec Clavano. | ulat ni Racquel Bayan
