You need not be a regular tourist around the country to notice the best efforts of the President Marcos Jr. administration to improve tourist destinations, physically and aesthetically, to ensure their enjoyment under the safe environment.
In fact, the rehabilitation, restoration, and enhancement of frequently-visited tourist spots are given priority by the Marcos administration as provided for by the ambitious infrastructure programs under the “Build Better More.”
This infrastructure project is on top of the same effort with the historical and cultural heritage sites across the country to preserve its authenticity and national values, which also aligns with President Marcos’ Philippine Development Plan 2023–2028.
Recognizing its potential as a significant driver of economic growth and job creation, President Marcos implemented several initiatives focused on the rehabilitation and upgrading of diverse tourist attractions.
While it emphasizes tourism development, the Marcos administration is also reiterating sustainable tourism practices, which involve balancing economic development with environmental protection alongside with the overall tourist experience.
Through the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), President Marcos ordered the enhancement and development of two eco-parks, installations of solar lights in at least two more, and enhancement of a coastal area.
Ordered to develop were the Lantawan Eco-Park Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte, and tourism facilities at the Kabug Mangrove Park and Wetlands in Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay, both projects contributing to the environmental preservation and local economic development.
Echoing President Marcos for a sustainable environment, TIEZA said they are envisioning a “tourist-friendly” environment that promotes eco-tourism while preserving the natural landscape.
These efforts aim to attract more visitors and boost local economic activities through tourism-related ventures.
The Kabug Mangrove Park and Wetlands is one of the scenic attractions in Zamboanga Sibugay, and its development was finished on December 23, 2024, after a year of rehabilitation.
Another infrastructure program undertaken under the Marcos administration was the construction of Boardwalk along San Jose Airport Phase II in Occidental Mindoro which aims to enhance the coastal experience by providing a safe and enjoyable space for walking, jogging, and leisure activities.
The boardwalk will highlight the natural beauty of the beach, promoting both relaxation and tourism at the same time. The project was concluded on September 15, 2023.
As has been reminded by President Marcos, the safety and security of the tourists should be of utmost importance. TIEZA ordered the installations of solar streetlights in two of the most frequented areas in Luzon.
The first is along the 10-kilometer stretch of the busy Manila North Road in Saan Fernando, La Union, which is known for its pristine beaches, hiking trails, pilgrimage tours, clay pottery, and grape picking.
TIEZA, which funded the project, was in consideration of the safety of the visitors and enhancing the area’s tourism appeal, as well as addressing the traffic flow. The installation of solar streetlights was finished on March 3, 2023.
Another installation of the Solar Street Lights project, this time in Coron, Palawan, another major tourist destination, was made.
The street lighting is not only for aesthetic purposes; it is more about enhancing the safety and security of both local tourists and visitors. The streetlights likewise support embarkation and disembarkation at nearby islands and other tourist attractions.
The installation of solar streetlights started on August 17, 2023, and was finished on February 22, 2024.
