Pina-aaksyonan ni PBA Party-list Representative Margarita ‘Migs’ Nograles sa Senado ang panukala na magpapataw ng mas mabigat na parusa sa tobacco smuggling.

Kasunod ito serye ng pagkakasabat ng smuggled na sigarilyo sa Zamboanga at Sulu.

Aniya nasa halos ₱522-million ang halaga ng excise tax na dapat naipataw sa nahuling shipment na maaari sanang inilaan sa dagdag na eskuwelahan o post-harvest facility.

“We really need to pass this law classifying cigarette smuggling as economic sabotage. We are losing billions due to cigarette smuggling and smugglers are undeterred because the government can only confiscate and impose fines. We need a tougher law to stop this massive smuggling of cigarettes,” saad ni Nograles.

Disyembre ng nakaraang taon nang pagtibayin ng Kamara ang House Bill 3917 na mag-aamyenda sa Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016 (RA 10845).
