Kinumpirma ng Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) ang pagdaan ng apat na barko ng People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) sa Balabac Strait sa Palawan.
Ayon kay AFP Public Affairs Office Chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad, na-monitor ang naturang mga barko noong hapon ng Hunyo 19 na dumadaan sa karagatan sa loob ng 12 nautical miles mula sa Palawan.
Unang na-monitor ang PLAN destroyer Luyang III (DDG-168) at frigate Jiangkai II (FFG-570) na tumatakbo ng 13 knots; at makalipas ang ilang oras, ang destroyer Renhai (CG-105) at replenishment oiler Fuchi (AOR-907), na tumatakbo ng 15 knots, lahat patungo sa Timog-Kanlurang direksyon.
Ayon kay Trinidad, ang Balabac strait ay pangkaraniwang ginagamit ng mga international vesssel na tumatawid sa karagatan ng Pilipinas; at bilang bahagi ng Standard Operating Procedure, nag-isyu ng challenge ang AFP sa mga naturang barko na tumugon naman nang maayos.
Tiniyak ni Trinidad na mananatiling mapagmatyag ang AFP sa pagbabantay at pangangalaga sa maritime interests ng Pilipinas. | ulat ni Leo Sarne
