Tobacco products, hiniling na maisama sa saklaw ng Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Law

Hiniling ng tobacco products stakeholders na isama sa mga produktong saklaw ng Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Law ang tabako.

Sa pagdinig ng Senate Committee on Agriculture kaugnay sa mga pag-amyenda sa batas, ibinahagi ng kumpanyang Philip Morris International na aabot sa 73 percent ng mga tobacco na ginagamit sa Pilipinas ay smuggled.

Pinaliwanag ng regional head ng kumpanya na si Rodney Van Dooren, na noong taong 2021 ay nakakolekta ng 176 billion pesos excise tax ang bansa mula sa tobacco industry.

Pero noong 2022 ay bumaba ang tax collection nang magpatupad ng mas mataas na excise tax.

Nangangahulugan aniya itong tumaas ang bilang ng smuggled brands ng tobacco products.

Kabilang naman aniya sa mga pinanggagalingan ng smuggled tobacco products ay ang Indonesia, Vietnam at India.

Sinabi naman ng Associated Anglo-American Tobacco Corp. na bukod sa apektado ang kabuhayan ng tobacco farmers ay marami ring kabataan ang nabibigyan ng pagkakataong makabili ng mas murang sigarilyo.

Nangako naman si Senador Cynthia Villar na tutugunan ang naturang hiling ng tobacco stakeholders lalo pa’t suportado aniya ito ng mga kongresista. | ulat ni Nimfa Asuncion
