Hindi inaprubahan ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. ang isinusulong na pansamantalang implementasyon ng rice tariff reduction, upang tugunan ang surge sa presyo ng bigas sa merkado.

Ayon sa pangulo, nag desisyon sila ng agriculture at economic managers na hindi pa ito ang tamang panahon upang ibaba ang taripa sa bigas.

Base kasi sa projection ng world rice prices, bababa ito.

“We decided with the agriculture and economic managers that … it was not the right time to lower the tariff rates because the projection of world rice prices is that it will go down. So, this is not the right time to lower tariffs. Tariffs are generally lowered when the price is going up,” —Pangulong Marcos.

Ang pahayag na ito ni Pangulong Marcos ay kasunod ng sectoral meeting sa Malacanang, kung saan inilatag ng NEDA ang updates kaugnay sa isinusulong na rice tariff reduction.

Ilang magsasaka ang nagpahayag ng pagkabahala sa negatibong epekto sakaling ipatupad ito.

Nang tanungin naman ang pangulo kung aalisin na ba ang price cap sa regular at well milled rice, sabi ng pangulo, mananatili pa ito, lalo’t kailangang mapag-aralan munang maigi ang usaping ito.

“Pag-aralan natin mabuti,” —Pangulong Marcos.

Php41 ang price cap para sa regular milled rice, at Php45 para sa well milled rice.
