EJ Obiena continues to make strides as he captured the men’s pole vault silver medal at the Meeting Madrid after clearing a season best 5.85 meters on Thursday in Spain.
It was the third straight time the Tokyo and Paris Olympian cleared at least 5.80 meters this month.
Obiena made the height in two tries and finished second via countback as Portugal’s Pedro Buaro needed three attempts. The 30-year old Filipino tried to go for gold but failed thrice at 5.95 meters.
Bo Kanda Lita Baehre of Germany topped the event after clearing a personal best 5.90 meters.
Obiena is set to defend his pole vault crown in September in the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
