The Philippines pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat world no. 3 Puerto Rico, 5-4 in the WBSC Women’s Softball World Cup Group Stage in Lima, Peru.
Nicole Hammoude blasted a 76 mph line drive into centre field to bring home the winning run in the seventh inning after the Blu Girls trailed 1-4.
In the bottom half of the final frame, Skylynne Ellazar lined a 74 mph drive off the left-field wall to drive in two runs, before Alyssa Daniell followed with an RBI single, setting up Hammoude’s heroics for the dramatic walk-off victory.
Glory Alonzo kept the Philippines within striking distance with five solid innings, allowing two runs on two hits. Royevel Palma pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win.
However, the celebration was short-lived as the Blu Girls returned to the diamond one hour later and bowed to world no.12 Great Britain, 0-5.
The Philippines, currently fifth in the group with a 1-3 record, must defeat Peru in its last opening round game on Saturday and rely on other results to keep their playoff hopes alive.
