The Philippine sepak takraw women’s double team still made history in the 20th Asian Games despite coming up short in the championship match on Tuesday.
The national squad lost to a formidable Vietnam side 8-15, 4-15 earlier today and got the silver medal, which is the country’s highest finish since the sport debuted in the 1990 Beijing Asian Games.
The podium finish also added to the men’s regu team’s bronze on Monday.
Team captain Abegail Sinogbuhan, Jean Marie Sucalit, and substitute Nelly Jay Salon reached the championship round with a decisive 2–0 sweep of Laos in the semifinals, which also gave the Philippines its first-ever appearance in an Asian Games sepak takraw final.
Prior to that, the trio posted a 2-1 record in the group stage, beating Japan and India, and losing to South Korea.
The national sepak takraw team will look to sustain the momentum on Wednesday as the women’s quadrant squad opens its Group A preliminary campaign against India at 1:00 PM Philippine time.
