Reigning champion Annie Ramirez headlines the 20-member Philippine jiujitsu team in the 10th JJIF Ju-Jitsu Asian Championship, scheduled July 16 to 19 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The four-day tournament features about 355 athletes from 24 teams across the continent.
Ramirez, 35, was the Philippines’ lone gold medalist in last year’s edition in Amman, Jordan, capturing the women’s adult -57kg title. She returns to Almaty determined to defend her crown and build momentum for a busy international campaign.
She is joined by last year’s silver medalists Dylan Valmores and Jenna Kaila Napolis, as well as former bronze medalists Joanne Pauline Tan and Santino Luzuriaga.
Following the Asian Championship, Ramirez will compete in the JJIF World Championships from August 1-9 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, before shifting her focus to the 20th Asian Games scheduled September 19 to October 4 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
