Gilas Pilipinas Youth Men ended their FIBA U18 Asia Cup stint in 8th place, after yielding to Chinese Taipei 78-89, Sunday, in Ahmedabad, India.
The nationals squandered a 12 point-second quarter lead, as the Taiwanese unloaded a 23-3 blast and closed out the first half with a 49-41 advantage.
In the third quarter, Gilas Youth tried to catch up as Bruce Tubongbanua and Ethan Aguas converted back-to-back baskets to trim the gap, 56-53, but the Taiwanese held on and regained their double-digit lead going to the payoff period, 72-60.
Chinese Taipei sustained its momentum and posted its biggest lead at 14, after Carter Matthew Coleman’s shot with 6:18 left in the match. The Philippines never recovered from there to relinquish the win.
Coleman finished with a game-high 23 points and 15 rebounds for Chinese Taipei, who avenged their 88-89 loss to the Filipinos in the group stage.
Chog Moral led the Philippines’ losing cause with 22 points to go with nine rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Aguas chipped in 15 points as Tubongbanua had 10 markers.
