NAGOYA, Japan – Victoria Bossong fell short of winning gold in her first stint with the Philippine team, as she ended up with the bronze in the women’s 800-meter event at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
The 24-year-old Filipino-American clocked 2:05.34 in the final, finishing behind gold medalist Wu Xiangjiao of China, who won in 2:04.49, and Bahrain’s Nelly Korir, who took the silver in 2:05.16.
Bossong kept pace with the leading runners for most of the race but failed to make her move in the final stretch as she was positioned on the outer lane.
The former US NCAA standout entered the final as the favorite after posting the fastest qualifying time of 2:02.34 on Monday.
Bossong said she would have been happier had she won the gold, but acknowledged that the experience she gained would help her in future competitions representing the Philippines.
“And I’m just happy I was able to bring home a medal for the Philippines. I hope next time it’s a gold though. The time was quite slow this time,” she said.
