Alex Eala and Venus Williams exited the Canadian Open doubles competition after a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Liudmila Samsonova and Miyu Kato in the Round of 32 in Toronto on Friday, Philippine time.
The wild-card duo, playing together for only the second time, rallied from a break down to level the opening set at 4-4 but Samsonova and Kato won six straight games to seize control of the match.
Eala and Williams trimmed a 4-0 deficit to 4-2 in the second set and later broke serve to stay alive at 5-3, but the Russian-Japanese pair held serve in the next game to seal the victory.
The defeat ended Williams’ campaign in Toronto after her earlier singles exit.
Eala, meanwhile, will face Caty McNally of the U.S. in the third round on Saturday morning, Philippine time, after opening win over Alycia Parks.
