The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) fined former Ateneo men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin over ₱4.9 million for violating working permit rules for foreign nationals.
In its decision released on Tuesday, DOLE said it found Baldwin liable for failing to secure the required Certificate of Exemption for his employment.
The Kiwi-American coach was assessed an administrative fine of P4.9 million computed at P10,000 per day of violation covering a 490-day period from February 10, 2025 until his resignation on June 15, 2026.
The department also held Ateneo de Manila University “jointly and solidarily liable” with Baldwin for the administrative fine for failing to secure the COE.
Ateneo previously said Baldwin was not a university employee but worked under an independent contractor agreement.
In addition, DOLE ordered Baldwin to pay a P10,000 administrative fine for working for Ateneo without a valid Alien Employment Permit from December 1, 2015 to September 28, 2016.
Ateneo was given the same penalty for employing Baldwin without a valid AEP.
According to DOLE, its decision “underscores the Department’s commitment to enforcing labor laws fairly and without regard to the status or standing of any employer or institution”.
