Ernest John Obiena posted a new season best of 5.91 meters and captured the men’s pole vault gold medal at the 2026 Golden Sand Meeting in Międzyzdroje, Poland.
The clearance was Obiena’s first jump beyond 5.90 meters since the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he cleared 5.90 meters in the final.
In 2025, Obiena also attempted 5.90 meters at the Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge in Makati City but failed all three attempts.
The gold was Obiena’s seventh of the year as he continues his preparations for his title defense in next month’s 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. Qatar’s Seifeldin Abdelsalam took silver at 5.75
