Alexandra Eala came up short against world no.10 Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 4-6, 2-6 in the third round of the Cincinnati Open on Tuesday.
Eala took the opening set after a grueling battle that included a 20-minute fifth game, which the Filipina won to lead 3-2. Anisimova broke for 4-3 but Eala responded with three straight games to move a set away from the Round of 16.
Anisimova, however, bounced back in the second set, breaking Eala for 4-3 before holding serve to force a decider.
The 21-year old Eala appeared to be in control as she raced to a 2-0 advantage in the third.
But Anisimova quickly turned the match around, winning the next six games to complete the comeback and set up a clash against no.6 seed Linda Noskova.
Eala, on the other hand, now shifts her focus to the US Open, where she will compete in singles and in mixed doubles with Felix Auger-Aliassime
