A courtesy resignation looms for members of the Philippine sepak takraw team if the country’s athletes fail to deliver medals at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Pilipinas Sepak Takraw Association Inc. (PSTAI) president Karen Tanchanco-Caballero made the candid revelation during her guest appearance at the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum on Tuesday in Malate, Manila.
“I’d like to share that there is a courtesy resignation for all athletes if they do not come home with a medal,” Caballero said.
Caballero stressed that there is no room for failure for the national squad, particularly with the government providing strong support for the team’s training and preparations for the Asiad.
“We’ve given them all the support they needed for so many years, so this will be the culmination for their ‘ultimate’ [goal]. It’s only fair for the Filipino taxpayers,” said the PSTAI chief.
Despite the pressure, Caballero expressed confidence in the team’s preparations for the 20th Asian Games.
“They are ready. They prepared intensively for this, so I’m very confident they will do what it takes to win. There is no room for them to fail,” she said.
“Alam naman nila yung pinasok nila. This is elite sports, and the best of the best in Asia will meet. This is the Olympics of Asia, and they know that,” Caballero added.
