Hindi pinababayan ng Marcos administration ang tatlong Pilipinong seafarer na nakakulong sa Algeria, habang hinihintay ang resolusyon ng drug case na inihain laban sa mga ito.
Ayon kay Communications Usec. Claire Castro, ang Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) at Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), ginagawa na ang lahat ng paraan upang matulungan ang mga ito.
“Number one, the case of the remaining three Filipino seafarers in Algeria involving several kilograms of cocaine is still pending resolution in the court of Algeria.” — Castro.
Nagpaabot na rin aniya ng counsel ang gobyerno para sa tatlong manlalayag, kung saan ang abogado ng mga ito, nagtagumpay sa pag-dismiss ng kaso sa naunang limang Pilipinong seafarers na naakusahan.
Ang tatlong natitira, naibaba na ang kaniyang sentensya, at naghihintay na lamang ng resulta ng nauna nang apela.
“The three remaining seafarers had their sentences reduced and are awaiting the results of the appeal.” — Castro.
Nakapag-arrange na rin aniya ng compassionate visits para sa pamilya ng mga ito, habang nakapagpaabot na ng financial assistance para sa mga una nang napauwi ng bansa.
“Of the families of the seafarers during their detention and provided financial assistance to those who have been repatriated. The shipowner has been providing continues remittances to the families during the period of their detention.” — Castro.
Ang DMW aniya, patuloy ang ginagawang monitoring sa status ng kaso.
“The DMW is continuously monitoring the status of the case. And the Philippine government respects the judicial process of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria as it pursues all legal avenues to protect the rights of its Filipino nationals who are currently detained.” — Castro.
