Alex Eala recorded her first victory at Wimbledon by defeating Mexico’s Renata Zarazua in their first-round match, 6-1, 6-2, in London early Wednesday morning.
The Filipina star posted a commanding 5-1 lead in both the first and second sets to exact revenge over the Mexican player.
Zarazua defeated Eala in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Cary Tennis Classic in the USA.
The 29th seeded Eala proved her worth in the prestigious tournament after advancing to the Round of 64, where she will face Australia’ Maya Joint from Australia.
The highly-anticipated match between Eala and tennis legend Serena Williams will no longer happen as Joint dispatched Williams in their first-round encounter, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
The Eala-Joint match is scheduled on Thursday, July 2 for a spot in the round of 32.
Eala’s advancement to Wimbledon is her second second-round appearance in a Grand Slam, having also reached the second round of the 2025 US Open.
