Alexsandra Ann Diaz is determined to follow in the footsteps of her aunt and the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo.
The 15-year-old weightlifting standout recently completed a golden treble and shattered two youth world records at the IWF Youth World Championships in Cali, Colombia.
“Gusto ko pong maging Olympian parehas ni Tita Hidilyn,” said Diaz, who learned the sport at the young age of six. “Try lang po, wala namang imposible.”
Diaz dominated the women’s 48kg division, lifting 77kg in the snatch before successfully clearing 98kg in the clean and jerk to set a new youth world record. Her combined total of 175kg also established a new youth world mark.
For Diaz, weightlifting is not just a sport but a chance to transform her future.
“Sa weightlifting, diyan magbabago yung buhay mo. Sobrang saya po kasi yung auntie Hidilyn ko po yung motivation namin para magtuloy-tuloy po,” she added.
Following her dominant performance in Colombia, Diaz will look to carry her momentum into the 2026 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships slated from August 7 to 14 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
