President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. conferred a Presidential Citation on Filipina tennis star and World No. 28 Alex Eala at Malacañang Palace on Monday following her historic campaign at the Wimbledon.
The 21-year old Eala recently became the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam women’s singles tournament after defeating defending champion and world No. 3 Iga Swiatek.
In his remarks, President Marcos Jr. praised Eala for bringing pride and honor to the Philippines through her achievements on the international stage.
“You have brought such pride to the Philippines, to the Filipinos, and not only because of your success, but also because the grace with which you handle that success. Because the way you play and the way you comport yourself makes us proud because you show the greatest, best qualities of Filipinos,” said Marcos.
The President also said Eala showcases the finest qualities of the more than 110 million Filipinos every time she competes. He assured the young tennis star of the unwavering support of the Filipino people as she continues her career.
“You never fail to remind everyone that you are a Filipina. We have found in you a new champion, a champion who has made the Philippines proud, who has reminded Filipinos what a great race Filipinos are because we produce someone like you. And that the qualities that you show the world are the best qualities of Filipinos. And for that, as President, I guess that’s what really strikes me,” added Marcos.
