Alex Eala never imagined that her tennis achievements would one day earn her a reception at Malacañang as well as recognition from the country’s highest office.
Eala, together with her parents Michael and Rizza Maniego Eala, was welcomed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos during the “Tagumpay Nating Lahat: A Homecoming Reception for Alex Eala”, where she received a Presidential Citation in recognition of her historic campaign at the Wimbledon Championships in London.
The 21-year old athlete said she was deeply honored by the warm reception, adding that the recognition made all her years of hard work even more meaningful.
“Thank you, Mr. President, for this special honor and for the warm welcome. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that I would be having dinner here at the Malacañang Palace next to you and be receiving such kind and genuine words. I feel very seen,” said Eala.
“Hearing that come from you, I feel like all the hard work that I’ve done is seen. All the hours that aren’t on TV are seen and validated and appreciated, so thank you so, so much,” she added.
Eala emphasized that her accomplishments are not hers alone, but also to every Filipino who has supported her journey. She expressed gratitude for the unwavering encouragement she has received throughout her career and said she takes pride in carrying the Philippine flag on the world stage.
“I’m so grateful that I’m able to share my triumphs, most especially my most recent run at Wimbledon, with the country. Lubos kong ipinagmamalaki ang pagiging Pilipino,”
Looking ahead, Eala vowed to continue representing the Philippines with honor and excellence as she competes against the world’s best. She said wearing the Philippine colors serves as a constant source of inspiration every time she steps onto the court.
“I carry the flag with me wherever I go, and I am a firm believer that where you come from is a big part of who you are. I promise that I will continue to represent the Philippines in the best way that I possibly can,” Eala concluded.
Eala is set to meet her supporters in a meet-and-greet event on Wednesday at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City.
