The Philippine Sports Commission is granting an additional P6,000 allowance to every member of Team Philippines bound for the 20th Asian Games and 5th Asian Para Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
PSC chairperson John Patrick Gregorio made the announcement during Thursday’s official send-off ceremony at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.
The additional allowance comes on top of the Philippine government’s budget for the country’s participation in the Asian Games, with the PSC Board also approving an additional P30 million to address unexpected expenses ahead of the Games.
“Talunin natin yung record natin noong 2018 at 2022 ngayong 2026. Ang gusto at panalangin nating lahat, more than four golds that will really make us happy. Sabi ko sa mga atleta, talunin nyo lang yan, may karagdagang reward na ibibigay ang PSC,” said Gregorio.
Gregorio added the additional funding was necessary after record-breaking torrential rains in Nagoya caused disruptions and led to higher accommodation costs for the Philippine delegation.
The PSC is also coordinating closely with the Philippine Embassy in Japan to ensure the safety and welfare of Filipino athletes and officials, while minimizing any distractions as Team Philippines prepares for the Asiad.
“We’re coordinating with the Philippine embassy in Tokyo, nagpapadala na po tayo ng tulong kung ano ang kailangan. Ako naman po ay nananalig na huhupa na yan,” shared the PSC chief.
“Maganda naman po ang preparasyon natin at may mga atleta tayo na nandoon na. I think, it’ll be better in the next few days, ipanalangin po natin yan para hindi ma-distract ang Pilipinong atleta, para lumaban at makamit natin yung lagpas sa apat na ginto na ating inaasam-asam kasama ang Philippine Olympic Committee,” Gregorio concluded.
