Gilas Pilipinas rained threes to rout Kazakhstan, 109-78, for their first win in Group C action of the 20th Asian Games.
After a tight 18-15 lead at the end of the opening quarter, the nationals pulled away in the second frame to erect a 50-37 advantage at the half.
The defending men’s basketball champions continued their onslaught in the final half to claim the important victory which kept them in contention after a sorry 85-89 loss to Bahrain on Friday.
Jerrick Ahanmisi paced the Filipinos with 22 points, firing seven of the team’s 16 three-pointers.
Robert Bolick and Sedrick Barefield both atoned for their scoreless performances against the Bahrainis, combining for seven triples. Bolick finished with 20 points as Barefield added 11 markers.
Calvin Oftana scored 12 points, as Zavier Lucero tallied 10 points and seven rebounds for the Philippines.
Anton Bykov led Kazakhstan with 15 markers.
The Philippines, now holding a 1-1 card, will next face unbeaten China on Monday, September 14 at 12 noon, Manila time, in a rematch of last edition’s men’s basketball semifinals.
