Two-time Olympic champion Carlos Yulo successfully advanced to four final events at the 20th Asian Games men’s artistic gymnastics qualifiers on Monday in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
The Filipino gymnastics star spearheaded the national squad’s impressive showing, topping the floor exercise with a dominant score of 14.600 points. He will be joined in the floor final by his younger brother, Eldrew Yulo, who qualified in fourth place with 13.966 points.
Despite suffering an early fall during his signature vault routine, Carlos still managed a seventh-place finish with 13.649 points to secure a spot in the finals. He trails fellow Filipino gymnast Juancho Miguel Besana, who delivered a stellar performance to qualify fourth with 13.933 points.
Carlos locked in his third individual apparatus final on the parallel bars, placing sixth with 14.266 points. Eldrew also booked a ticket to the parallel bars finals, matching his brother’s achievement by finishing sixth in his respective qualification group with 13.433 points.
Backed by robust performances from Justine Ace de Leon and Zach Nuñez, the Yulo brothers and Besana safely propelled the Philippines into the Team All-Around Final with a combined score of 232.093 points.
Earlier in the competition, the Yulo brothers missed out on the podium during the Men’s Individual All-Around Final, where Eldrew finished seventh and Carlos placed ninth. China’s Zhang Boheng clinched the gold medal, while Japan’s Oka Shinnosuke and Hashimoto Daiki secured the silver and bronze, respectively.
The Men’s Team Final is scheduled for September 23, followed by the highly anticipated Apparatus Finals on September 24.
Meanwhile, the women’s artistic gymnastics qualification is set for Tuesday (September 22).
