The Carlos Yulo-led Philippine men’s artistic gymnastics team finished sixth in the team final of the 20th Asian Games on Wednesday at the Nagoya City General Gymnasium in Japan.
The national squad missed out on the country’s first gymnastics podium finish at the Asiad after tallying 227.359 points across six apparatuses. The Philippines registered 42.365 on vault, 38.099 on still rings, 36.965 on horizontal bar, 35.632 on pommel horse, and 36.099 on parallel bars.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo earned immense applause from the crowd, topping his pet event — the floor exercise with a score of 14.266 points.
The 26-year-old icon also powered the team with 14.566 on vault and 14.166 on parallel bars. The rest of the national team features rising star Karl Eldrew Yulo, Justine Ace de Leon, Juancho Miguel Besana, and Zachary Nuñez.
Powerhouse China retained its Asian Games gold medal with a dominant 255.095 points. Host nation Japan took home the silver medal with 254.026, while Chinese Taipei completed the identical podium repeat from the previous edition to secure the bronze with 239.896.
