Alas Pilipinas claimed its first ever medal in the Asian Games beach volleyball history after partners Khylem Progella and Sofiah Pagara took the bronze with a thrilling come from behind 13-21, 23-21, 15-13 win over China’s Jie Dong and Shuting Cao on Friday at the Hekinan Ryokuchi Beach Court in Aichi, Japan.
The Filipinas never surrendered after the Chinese duo asserted force in the first frame as they erased a 19-20 deficit and saved one match point in the second to keep their medal hopes alive.
In the decider, Progella and Pagara broke away from a 10-10 tie and reached match point at 14-12.
Their podium finish is the first for the Philippines since beach volleyball was first played at the 1994 Hiroshima Games.
