President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sports development, highlighting the achievements of Filipina tennis star Alex Eala during his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.
President Marcos said Eala’s success on the global stage has united Filipinos around the world and brought immense pride to the nation. Beyond international recognition, he expressed hope that her accomplishments will inspire more Filipinos to pursue sports and adopt healthier, more active lifestyles.
“Mahalaga rin sa atin ang sports. Itinaas natin nang triple ang suporta natin dito. Hindi lamang dahil sa aliw na hatid nito, kundi para sa kalusugan,” Marcos said.
“Sa nag-uumapaw nating suporta kay Alex Eala, sana ay marami ang ma-engganyo para matuto at maglaro hindi lamang ng tennis, kundi ng iba pang sport,” he added.
The President also voiced optimism about the continuous growth of football in the Philippines.
“Sa halimbawa ng Filipinas women’s football team, sana rin ay mas sumikat pa ang football sa ating bansa at marami ang maglaro. Balang araw, baka makasali na ang Pilipinas sa FIFA [Men’s] World Cup.”
Meanwhile, the Philippine Football Federation thanked Marcos for recognizing the achievements of the Philippine women’s national football team and for expressing his hope that the men’s national team will also get to play in the FIFA World Cup.

Sa tulong ng Philippine Sports Commission at Philippine Olympic Commiittee, sama-sama nating iangat ang Pilipinas sa global stage ng football! Tayo naman, Pilipinas!” the PFF shared on its official Facebook page.
