President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. congratulated Alexandra Eala after the Filipina tennis star made history as the first Philippine player to win a WTA 500 singles title at the Mubadala DC Open in Washington.
Marcos praised Eala’s breakthrough victory, saying her achievement continues to elevate Philippine tennis and inspire young Filipinos to pursue their dreams in sports.
“Alex Eala does it again,” Marcos said in a message celebrating the historic milestone. “The Philippines now has its first WTA 500 champion.”
Eala completed a remarkable comeback in the rain-delayed final, defeating American world No. 3 and top seed Jessica Pegula, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, to capture her maiden WTA Tour singles crown.
The 21-year-old Filipino star turned the match around after trailing 6-4, 4-3, winning the final nine games to dominate the deciding set and secure the biggest title of her young career.
Marcos lauded Eala for continuing to break barriers and redefine what is possible for Philippine tennis.
“Kasama mo ang sambayanang Pilipino sa pagdiriwang ng panibagong tagumpay na ito,” Marcos said, adding that the nation celebrates with her in this historic achievement.
The President also expressed hope that Eala’s success would motivate more Filipino athletes to dream bigger and strive for excellence on the global stage.
“Mabuhay ka, Alex!” Marcos said.
Earlier, on July 13, Marcos conferred a Presidential Citation on Eala at Malacañang Palace during the tennis star’s brief visit to the Philippines following her successful Wimbledon campaign. He also highlighted Eala’s accomplishments during his fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 27 at the Batasang Pambansa, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening sports development and supporting Filipino athletes.
