Legendary PBA import and current Gilas Pilipinas assistant coach Sean Chambers is confident of the capability of the All-PBA national team set to defend its Asian Games title.
At the same time, the six-time PBA champion and one-time Best Import awardee admitted to Sports Radio that great expectations come with severe pressure, especially since this Gilas team is very different from the team that swept the fourth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
Chambers hopes that the present iteration of Gilas Asiad squad will deliver a faster, more aggressive performance than what they showed during their blowout exhibition losses to South Korea.
“I know it’s going to be a tough challenge,” Chambers told Sports Radio. “But anything’s possible, so let’s all hope for them.”
The Philippines completed its 12-man roster by adding Calvin Oftana, who is the only remaining member of the 2023 team that ended a 61-year gold medal drought.
Gilas will begin its title defense on Friday, September 11 against a Bahrain team powered by four naturalized players led by former NBA player JaKarr Sampson.
Meanwhile, Chambers will not be with the Nationals for the continental showcase in Japan as the Far Eastern University Tamaraws head coach is fully committed to the upcoming UAAP Season 89 basketball tournament.
