Top seed Alex Eala beat Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland, 7-5, 6-0, to reach the semifinals of the women’s singles at the Center Court of the Higashima Park Tennis Center.
After a tight opening set, world No. 18 Eala showcased her WTA-level game, blanking the world No. 147 Garland in the second set.
“It was a really close first set. A lot of breaks and some good hitting. I think a lot of deuces as well,” Eala said.
“Maybe I just had my way in the important points and I got a couple more during those tight moments,” she added.
Meanwhile, Eala will next face China’s Wang Xiyu for a place in the final.
