Filipina tennis star Alex Eala will look to win gold as she hopes to once again represent the Philippines at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, this September.
The world no.28 Eala made her Asian Games debut in Hangzhou, China in 2023, where she captured two bronze medals in women’s singles and mixed doubles alongside Francis Casey Alcantara.
Speaking during a BPI press conference in Makati City on Tuesday, Eala said it is always a privilege to wear the Philippine colors, adding that competing alongside fellow Filipino athletes brings a unique sense of pride and motivation.
However, her Asian Games participation remains uncertain as the tennis competition, scheduled from September 27 to October 3, overlaps with the WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing, slated September 30 to October 11.
While Eala has yet to announce which event she will prioritize, she made it clear that winning an Asian Games gold medal for the Philippines remains one of her biggest goals.
The 21-year old returned home on Sunday to a hero’s welcome following her historic Wimbledon campaign, where she became the first Filipino player to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles tournament before falling to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the Round 16.
Eala is set to reconnect with Filipino fans later today during the “Home Court: The Alex Eala Fan Meet Experience” at the Glorietta Activity Center in Makati City before resuming her preparations for the hardcourt season.
