Carlos Yulo flaunted peerless poise once again to deliver the Philippines its first-ever gymnastics gold medal in the Asian Games’ rich 75-year history after topping the men’s artistic gymnastics floor exercise on Thursday at the Nagoya General Gymnasium.
His monumental performance also ended the country’s days of waiting for its first gold in the Aichi-Nagoya continental spectacle.
Yulo began the first of his three final events strongly, securing the highest score of 14.666 points in his favorite apparatus.
The Olympic double-gold medalist bested Kazakhstan’s Milad Karimi (14.600) and host Japan’s Shoma Tsukiyama (14.566), who took the silver and bronze medal, respectively.
Yulo’s younger brother Karl Eldrew finished in seventh place with 12.233 points.
Returning to the continental showpiece after eight years to claim the only missing piece in his gold medal collection, Carlos could exit the competition with three gold medals if he triumphs in the vault and parallel bars finals on Friday, September 25.
